Compass Rose Geocoin 2012 - set of 5

Compass rose geocoin 2012

This set cointains 5 geocoins, including the limited edition.

The design of these coins are based on a compass rose found on a map of Africa created in the late 1500s.

The details within the 2012 Compass Rose Geocoin reflect a diversity of images as grand as the continent that inspired it. On the front of the coin, the compass points hold images of some of the most awe-inspiring animals on the planet. The Lion, king of the beasts, once ruled the North. The majestic Elephant points his trunk to the East. A Great White Shark breeches the ocean surface in the South. And the migrating Wildebeest leads his herd westward to the watering hole. The back of the coin features a scene depicting two frightened sailors as they catch sight of the legendary ghost ship...The Flying Dutchman! 17th-century nautical folklore holds that the crew of the Flying Dutchman encountered a violent storm off the Cape Of Good Hope. It is said that the captain refused to turn back, exclaiming: “I will round this Cape, even if I have to keep sailing until doomsday!” And so he does, appearing as “a phantom ship all aglow” that shall never make port again.
Size: 50 mm in diameter
Some versions have glow colors on the back.
A gemstone in the centre of the compass rose.

Space Shuttle Geocoin

Space Shuttle GeocoinSpace Shuttle Geocoin

For many decades, the Space Shuttle has symbolized Florida's Space Coast, making it the perfect icon for the Space Coast Geocachers Association. Conceptualized in 1969, the Space Shuttle program was officially started in January, 1972. The first complete orbiter was originally planned to be named Constitution, but a massive write-in campaign from fans of the Star Trek television series convinced the White House to change the name to Enterprise.

On Jan. 28, 1986, 73 seconds after launch, the Space Shuttle Challenger was lost to us on mission STS-51-L. During her lifetime, Challenger made 10 successful flights, surviving over 62 days in space, and almost 1000 orbits around our Earth. Seventeen years later, during re-entry of mission STS-107, on Jan 16, 2003 the Space Shuttle Columbia was lost to us. During her lifetime, Columbia made 28 successful flights, surviving over 300 days in space, and over 4800 orbits around our Earth. Both shuttles had a crew of 7 astronauts.

This coin commemorates both those flights, and the fourteen brave souls who were lost during those final missions. The artwork on the back of the coin is an artistic composite of the mission insignias from both flights STS-51-L and STS-107. The tracking number can be found under the hinged bay door.
