Geocoins - Navigation special

Compass Rose 2009Compass Rose Geocoin 2009

The 2009 Compass Rose Geocoin™ design comes from a mid 1600s Portuguese map of Brazil. It is made with translucent colors and multiple metal angles in the background. The names of each wind direction encircle the compass rose.

Compass Rose 2009The backside image is an armillary sphere. Armillary spheres were developed a few hundred years before the birth of Christ, modified several times as new discoveries were made, and used until the late 1700s. Earlier models have Earth placed at the center of the universe, and then later models reflect the sun in the center of the universe. They were used for navigation, but not as effective as other methods.
Size: 44cm in diameter

We have this coin in antique silver, antique gold, antique copper, polished gold, polished nickel and black nickel. All in limited quantities.

NocturalNocturnal

This is a functional nocturnal coin which you can actually use to tell the time during the night and get your latitudinal deviation.
The early nocturnals were made of wood and later made in brass. They were approximately 7" to 10" in diameter plus the length of the handle and arm. The large circle, that has the handle attached to it, lists the days and months.

The Nocturnal Geocoin™ is trackable on Geocaching.com and has its own icon.

Planishere Northern en Southern
Planisphere

This is a functional planisphere coin which you can actually use to locate constellations.
Planispheres are maps of the celestial stars as seen from earth.

This is 8.25cm in diameter.
Both Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere versions are available

CosmolabeCosmolabe

Already some time in our collection, but still worthwhile mentioning, is the Cosmolabe.

The Cosmolabe geocoin is a fantasy navigational instrument. Just as an astrolabe is helpful in navigating from point to point on the world, the cosmolabe geocoin is meant to guide the user from world to world through different dimensions. The original was designed and created as a prop for the movie Worldwalker, now in pre-production.

Size: 65mm in diameter
